QuickBooks MCP server: Intuit's connector, the open-source server and community options compared

Seven ways to connect Claude to QuickBooks, from Intuit's hosted connector to read-only data pipes

Intuit's hosted connector is the easiest route, and it is available to US customers only

Intuit's help center says the QuickBooks connector for Claude needs an active Claude account and either a QuickBooks or Intuit Enterprise Suite subscription or basic business details, and is available to US customers only. You connect it from Claude under Connectors, choose QuickBooks and sign in to Intuit. Intuit says your data is not used to train Claude.

On July 28, 2026 Intuit expanded the connectors in Claude and ChatGPT from reading data to taking actions: creating, updating, sending and deleting invoices, estimates and payment links, payroll lookups such as employees and benefits, and loan benchmarking. Intuit says certain features require QuickBooks Payments. Its help page for Claude says destructive actions, such as deleting an invoice or estimate, need your confirmation before QuickBooks changes anything.

The ChatGPT help page says the feature is available to QuickBooks Online customers in the US and gives read-style example questions; it lists no write actions, although the July announcement covers both apps. Check what ChatGPT can do in your account before you rely on it.

Intuit's open-source server gives you 145 tools, and the setup is yours

Intuit publishes quickbooks-online-mcp-server on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. It has 145 tools: create, read, update and delete for 29 entity types such as customers, invoices, bills, vendors, employees, accounts, items and journal entries, plus 11 financial reports including the balance sheet, profit and loss, cash flow, trial balance and general ledger.

You run it on your own computer. You need Node.js, an app registered in the Intuit Developer Portal, OAuth client credentials and a refresh token. The sandbox accepts a localhost callback, but the production app rejects one, so a real company needs a public callback address such as a tunnel. The repository's own note says it is easy to run once authenticated but gated by Intuit's OAuth app setup.

Three environment settings, QUICKBOOKS_DISABLE_WRITE, QUICKBOOKS_DISABLE_UPDATE and QUICKBOOKS_DISABLE_DELETE, switch off the tools that create, change or delete records. Read tools always stay on.

Community servers add previews and per-company limits, and you audit the code

• lindsay-dot/better-quickbooks-Claude-connector runs locally and works across many client files from one connector. It requires you to name the company on every write, keeps per-company write rules in a policy file, previews imports, warns about closed periods and records each write in a local recovery ledger before it is sent.
• laf-rge/quickbooks-mcp runs with npx or on AWS and is aimed at people working in production books. It previews a draft before it commits an entry and resolves vendor and customer names so you do not pass internal IDs.
• matpb/qbo-mcp ships as a Claude Desktop bundle and keeps tokens in a local file, with writes defaulting to draft.
• Before you install any of them, check who holds your OAuth tokens, whether every write is logged, whether it respects closed months, when the last commit was and whether anyone reviews the code.

CData's and Coupler.io's servers are read-only, which is the safer choice when you only want answers. Hosted automation tools such as Zapier also connect QuickBooks to AI apps through MCP, and they keep your connection on a third party's servers.

Five controls to check in any QuickBooks MCP setup

An AI agent that can write to books needs more than a confirmation popup in the chat app. These five controls decide how bad a wrong entry can get.

   Step 1: Preview before write: you can see exactly what would change before anything saves.

   Step 2: Approval the agent cannot grant itself, by amount: a large entry waits for a named person.

   Step 3: Undo: any AI change can be reversed, and the reversal is recorded.

   Step 4: An audit log that names the AI app and the person whose connection it used.

   Step 5: Closed months stay closed: a change to a locked period waits for a person to reopen it.

Intuit's connector page describes confirmation for destructive actions. It does not describe approval by amount, undo of an AI change, or handling of closed periods, so keep QuickBooks' own reports and your CPA's review as the backstop. Accountable's MCP is the books, not a connector to your QuickBooks file

• You are a developer who wants every QuickBooks record available to an agent: use Intuit's open-source server, and turn off the delete and update tools until you trust it.
