AI accounting software

AI accounting software for startups that keeps your bookkeeping up to date

AI accounting software categorizes your transactions, matches every account to your bank and answers questions about your numbers, so you do not need a bookkeeper to keep your finances current. It is for founders and startup teams who want numbers they can show an investor, a buyer or a CPA at any time, and Accountable is that software: free for one company and $198 a month for three. It works inside ChatGPT and Claude, so you can ask for a change in plain words and see it in your books.

What AI does and what your CPA does

AI does the monthly bookkeeping, and your CPA still signs the tax return.

AI replaces the repeating work: categorizing, matching to the bank, posting recurring entries and preparing statements. It does not replace the person who answers for the return.

Where another tool is the better choice

  • Digits includes bill pay, invoicing and iPhone and iPad apps on every plan, and its security page states a SOC 2 Type II report. Accountable sends invoices and tracks bills, but you pay bills from your own bank, and its SOC 2 audit is still planned.
  • Pilot and Zeni put a person on your books and sell tax and finance work. Accountable is software, and it does not file taxes.
  • Xero costs $177 a month for 3 companies against Accountable's $198, and includes unlimited users on every plan.
  • QuickBooks is what many US CPAs already know. If yours insists on it, send them Accountable's general ledger and statements, which every plan exports.
  • Kick Basic is $40 a month for one company, less than Accountable's $149 Pro plan.

Every transaction gets a category and its reason

Accountable names the vendor, picks the category and says how sure it is and why. You can change it, or tell it to categorize that vendor this way from now on.

Works inside ChatGPT and Claude

Ask your AI for a change in plain words, and see it in your books.

Connect ChatGPT or Claude to Accountable and either reads your real books on every plan. On Pro it can also categorize and post entries; every change is logged and undoable, and entries of $5,000 or more wait for an owner.

How to choose

Six questions to ask before you pay for AI accounting software.

  1. 1Does the AI show its reason for each category and let you undo it? Accountable shows the reason and how sure it was on every row.
  2. 2Is every account checked against your bank before a month locks? A month should tie only when the difference is $0.00.
  3. 3Does the price count every company in full? Three companies cost $198 a month on Accountable Pro, $300 on Digits Core and $420 on QuickBooks Plus.
  4. 4Can Claude or ChatGPT only read your books, or can they change them with your rules still in force? Digits and Puzzle give agents read-only access; Kick and Accountable allow writes on a paid plan.
  5. 5Does your CPA get a seat, and can you export everything? Export and your accountant's seat are free on every Accountable plan.
  6. 6Do you want software or a person? Pilot and Zeni put a bookkeeper on your books; the others expect you to answer the AI's questions.
  • One company, just starting

Start on Accountable Free, which categorizes the first 100 transactions a month at no cost, or Kick Free if you have under 250 transactions a year. Move up when the volume does.

The cheapest bookkeeping for a startup
  • Two or more companies

Per-company pricing adds up fast: three companies are $198 on Accountable Pro and $420 on QuickBooks Plus. Pick a tool that bills the workspace, not each company.

    Multi-entity accounting software
  • You want a person

Pilot and Zeni keep a bookkeeper on your books and sell tax and finance help. Software-only tools are cheaper, and your CPA still files the return.

What AI replaces and what a CPA still does
  • You use Claude or ChatGPT

Check whether the connection can write or only read. Accountable and Kick can change the books from a paid plan; Digits, Puzzle and Mercury Books give agents read-only access.

Questions about AI accounting software

What is AI accounting software?

AI accounting software does the repeating bookkeeping work for you: it categorizes each transaction, matches every account to your bank, prepares the monthly statements and answers questions about your numbers. Your CPA still prepares and signs the tax return.

Is there free AI accounting software?

Accountable Free covers one company and categorizes the first 100 transactions a month. Kick Free covers 250 transactions a year, and Mercury Books is free through 2026 for Mercury customers, then $35 a month.

What is the best AI accounting software for a small business?

It depends on who does the work. Accountable is built for founders and small teams who run one company or several and want software to do the bookkeeping, Pilot and Zeni add a person, and Xero is the lowest list price per company at $59 a month.

Can ChatGPT do my accounting?

ChatGPT alone cannot keep books, because it has no ledger and no bank connection. Accountable works inside ChatGPT and Claude: they read your books on every plan and, on Pro, can change them under your approval rules, with every change logged and undoable.

Will AI replace accountants?

AI replaces the monthly bookkeeping: categorizing, matching to the bank and preparing statements. A CPA still prepares and signs the tax return, advises on entity and equity choices, and represents you before the IRS.

Is AI accounting accurate?

In our internal benchmarks, Accountable is 99% accurate, 100 times faster than a human accountant and makes 90% fewer mistakes than a human bookkeeper. Every category shows its reason and can be undone, and a month locks only when each account matches its bank statement.

What is the best AI accounting software for startups?

Accountable fits founders with several companies or who use Claude or ChatGPT: $198 a month for 3 companies, with one login and an AI agent that can write. Digits fits one company that wants bill pay built in, and Pilot fits founders who want a person plus software.

Does AI accounting software work with my CPA?

Yes. Your CPA gets a free seat on every Accountable plan, sees the same books and can export the trial balance, general ledger and statements as PDF, Excel or CSV. If your CPA works in QuickBooks, the exports let them keep doing so.

Accountable (accountable.im) is built by Circo, Inc. and is not related to accountable.eu or accountable.de. Facts about other tools were read on their own pages on Sep 30, 2026, except DualEntry's, read on September 27, 2026.
