AI accounting software for startups: what to look for before you buy
AI accounting software for startups should give every category a reason, check each account against your bank, price several companies fairly and let you undo any change. Those four checks matter more than the price. For one company the list prices run from $0 (Accountable Free, Kick Free) to $494 a month (Zeni, billed annually), and three companies cost $198 on Accountable Pro. Prices were checked September 30, 2026.

The short version
- Seven checks separate AI accounting software for startups: a reason on every category, a bank match before each month locks, price per company, agent access, approvals and undo, a free seat for your CPA, and export.
- Price is the check people stop at: one company costs $0 on Accountable Free, three companies cost $198 on Accountable Pro, and most rivals charge each company in full.
- A tool that lets Claude or ChatGPT only read your books is safer to start with, and one that lets them write needs approvals and undo.
- Free plans cover one company with a cap on transactions, so check the cap against your last three months of activity.
- Whatever you pick, your CPA still prepares and signs the tax return.
Seven checks decide which AI accounting software fits a startup
This guide is the checklist behind AI accounting software for startups, the page that compares ten tools with the day each fact was checked. Each check below is a question you can put to any vendor, in the order a founder usually needs the answer.
| Check | Why a startup needs it | What to ask the vendor |
|---|---|---|
| A reason on every category | You can audit the AI in seconds instead of redoing its work | Can I see why each transaction got its category, and how sure the AI was? |
| A bank match before a month locks | It is the only check the AI cannot talk its way past | Does a month lock only when each account matches its statement to $0.00? |
| Price per company | A second company is common, and most tools bill each in full | What do 2 and 3 companies cost, and is there one login? |
| Agent access | You will ask Claude or ChatGPT for changes | Can an agent only read my books, or write too, and under which rules? |
| Approvals and undo | A fast AI is only safe if you can stop and reverse it | What waits for a person, who is the approver, and can I undo any change? |
| A seat for your CPA | Your CPA files the return from the same books | Does my CPA get a seat, and is it free? |
| Export | Your books must outlive the vendor | Can I export the ledger and statements on every plan? |
Accountable's answers: the reason and confidence show on every row, a month locks only after every account matches its bank statement, Pro covers 2 companies and each extra is $49, agents can write on Pro with entries of $5,000 or more waiting for an owner, and your CPA's seat and export are free on every plan. Three of the seven checks separate the tools: price for 3 companies, several companies and agent access
The table repeats the flagship comparison for the three checks where tools differ most. Every cell is from the vendor's own page, read on Sep 30, 2026.
| Tool | 3 companies, a month | Several companies on one login | Can Claude or ChatGPT change the books? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accountable Free and Pro | $198 (Pro covers 2, the third is $49) | Yes. One login and one bill, with every company side by side | Yes on Pro. Changes apply at once, are logged under the agent's name and can be undone; entries of $5,000 or more wait for an owner |
| Digits Core | $300 (each company needs its own subscription) | Each business needs its own subscription, with no combined view | No. Its MCP is read-only on every plan |
| Zeni Starter | $1,647 at list (each business needs its own subscription) | Each business needs its own subscription | None listed on its pricing page |
| Puzzle Complete | $360 (each company is its own subscription) | Each company is its own account and subscription, and combined reports need a separate tool | No. Its MCP is read-only by policy and in alpha |
| Pilot Essentials | Not published | Not published | — |
| Kick Basic and Plus | $100 to $200 on Plus, depending on each extra company's transactions | Plus covers unlimited companies; each extra one is free for its first 250 transactions a year, then $50 a month | Yes. Read and write from the Basic plan |
| QuickBooks Online Plus | $420 (priced per company) | Each company needs its own subscription; combined books come only with Intuit Enterprise Suite | Partly. Its Claude connector creates invoices and customers; Intuit lists no journal entries or reconciliation |
| Xero Growing | $177 (priced per organization) | Each organization is its own subscription; one login switches between them, with no combined view built in | Partly. The Claude connector reads; the open-source MCP server writes invoices, contacts and payments and runs on your own computer |
| Mercury Books Books | Covers one company | No company switcher or combined view | No. Mercury's MCP server is read-only and in beta |
A dash or "Not published" means we found no published answer. See the Digits alternatives page for one tool in detail. The best AI accounting software for small businesses and startups guide says where each tool wins.
Startups at different stages need different checks first
- One company, no revenue yet: check the cap on a free plan. Accountable Free categorizes the first 100 transactions a month, and Kick Free covers 250 a year (see the cheapest bookkeeping for a startup).
- Raising money or selling: check the bank match and the export, because an investor asks for statements that tie to the bank (see investor-ready books).
- Two or more companies: check price per company and the combined view first (see multi-entity accounting).
- Working with Claude or ChatGPT: check agent access and approvals first (see can ChatGPT do my bookkeeping).
- Wanting a person: Pilot and Zeni put a bookkeeper on your books, and software-only tools expect you to answer the AI's questions (see what AI replaces in bookkeeping).
Run a one-hour trial on your own transactions before you pay
Step 1: Connect one bank account and one card, or upload a statement, for a month you already know.
Step 2: Open ten transactions and read the reason for each category. A tool that cannot give a reason fails the first check.
Step 3: Reconcile one account to its statement and note the difference. Anything other than $0.00 needs an explanation.
Step 4: Ask a question about your numbers, such as last month's burn, and check the answer against the ledger entries it cites.
Step 5: Make one change and undo it. Then read the log to see who made each change.

The same trial, with scoring, is in how accurate AI accounting software is and what to test.
Questions founders ask
What is AI accounting software for startups?
It is software that categorizes your transactions, matches every account to your bank and answers questions about your numbers, so you do not need a bookkeeper to keep your finances current. Your CPA still prepares the tax return.
What should a startup check first in AI accounting software?
Check that every category shows its reason and that a month locks only when each account matches its bank statement. Then check the price for the number of companies you will run.
Is there free AI accounting software for startups?
Yes. Accountable Free covers one company and categorizes the first 100 transactions a month, and Kick Free covers 250 transactions a year. Both have caps, so check them against your activity.
Can AI accounting software handle more than one company?
Yes, but pricing differs. Accountable Pro covers 2 companies for $149 a month and each extra is $49, while Digits, Puzzle, QuickBooks and Xero charge each company separately.
Do I still need a bookkeeper if I use AI accounting software?
Not for the monthly work of categorizing, matching to the bank and preparing statements, if you will answer the AI's questions each month. Choose a person at Pilot or Zeni if you will not.
