Best AI bookkeeping software for startups (October 2026): 8 tools compared with prices

The best AI bookkeeping software depends on who does the work. Digits, Puzzle and Accountable are software you run yourself, Pilot and Zeni add a bookkeeper, and QuickBooks and Xero ask you or an accountant to review. For 3 companies in October 2026, list prices run from $177 a month (Xero) to $420 (QuickBooks Plus), with Accountable at $198 and Digits Core at $300.

The short version

  • Three companies cost $198 a month on Accountable Pro, $300 on Digits Core, about $360 on Puzzle Complete and $420 on QuickBooks Online Plus.
  • Xero Growing costs $59 a month per company from October 1, 2026 ($55 before), but Xero's AI suggests matches and you do the bookkeeping.
  • Pilot and Zeni are the two on this list where a person does part of the work: Pilot Core starts at $299 a month billed annually, and Zeni costs $494 to $719.
  • Only Accountable and Kick let an outside AI agent change the books from a paid plan; Digits and Puzzle give agents read-only access.
  • Digits is the better choice if you want bill pay, invoicing and iPhone and iPad apps in the same product, and it holds a SOC 2 Type II report.

Eight AI bookkeeping tools side by side, priced for 1 and 3 companies

The table uses each vendor's own list price, checked on September 30, 2026. The 3-company column is what three separate companies cost if each takes the same plan, and Xero shows the new prices that start October 1, 2026. Several top-ranked roundups still show QuickBooks Plus at $90 a month; Intuit's own page now lists $140.

AI bookkeeping is five jobs, and each tool does a different mix

A tool that says AI can mean anything from a suggested category to a finished month. Before you compare prices, compare the jobs.

  • Categorizing: choosing the account for each bank transaction. Every tool on the list does this; Accountable shows the reason and how sure it is on each row, and Kick has an expert review the result.
  • Matching to the bank: checking each account's balance against the statement. Puzzle Complete, Digits, Pilot, Accountable and Xero (with the $5 add-on on Growing) automate it; QuickBooks starts its reconciliation help on Plus.
  • Closing the month: locking the numbers once they match. Accountable runs the close at 12:05 AM on the 1st and hands you one batch to approve; Puzzle's AI Close drafts the work during the month; Pilot's AI closes books monthly.
  • Answering questions: asking what you spent on software last quarter. Digits, Accountable, Xero (JAX) and QuickBooks all answer in plain language; Accountable's answers cite the entries behind them.
  • Changing the books on request: telling an AI to recategorize every Figma charge. Accountable on Pro and Kick from Basic accept write requests from Claude or ChatGPT; Digits' MCP and Puzzle's MCP are read-only.

Who does the bookkeeping decides the price more than the software does

Software plus a dedicated bookkeeperPilot Core, Zeni, QuickBooks LiveAnswer your bookkeeper's questions; they keep the books$494 to $719 a month on Zeni (billed annually); Pilot Core from $299 (billed annually); QuickBooks Live is quoted by your monthly expenses

Zeni's Starter plan is $494 a month billed annually ($549 list) and its Growth plan is $719 ($799 list). Pilot Core starts at $299 a month billed annually for $9,000 of monthly expenses. QuickBooks Live prices by your average monthly expenses and needs a QuickBooks Online subscription on top.

Where each tool is better than Accountable

A fair comparison names the other side's wins. These are the ones that matter to a startup.

  • Digits includes bill pay, invoicing and iPhone and iPad apps on every plan, and its security page states a SOC 2 Type II report. Accountable sends invoices and tracks bills but you pay bills from your own bank, and its SOC 2 audit is still planned.
  • Pilot and Zeni put a person on your books and sell tax and CFO work. Accountable is software with a person replying the same business day on Pro, and it does not file taxes.
  • Xero costs $177 a month for 3 companies against Accountable's $198, and includes unlimited users on every plan.
  • QuickBooks is what many US CPAs already know. If your CPA insists on it, Pro includes a one-way QuickBooks copy of your books, but QuickBooks itself stays the CPA's tool.
  • Puzzle Complete adds revenue recognition, classes, departments and projects that Accountable's Pro plan does not list.
  • Kick Basic is $40 a month for one company, less than Accountable's $149 Pro plan. Accountable's Free plan covers one company at $0 but categorizes only the first 100 transactions a month.

Worked example: what three companies cost over a year

Three companies, one founder, billed monthly (list prices, September 2026)

Xero Growing: 3 × $59 = $177 a month, $2,124 a year (or $2,304 with the $5 Auto-reconcile add-on on each). The price was $55 until September 30, 2026.

Accountable Pro: $149 for 2 companies + $49 for the third = $198 a month, $2,376 a year. The annual plan is $1,490 + $490 = $1,980.

Kick Plus: $100 a month for the first entity, then $50 for each entity past 250 transactions a year, so $1,200 to $2,400 a year.

Digits Core: 3 × $100 = $300 a month, $3,600 a year.

Puzzle Complete: 3 × $120 = $360 a month, $4,320 a year, if each company takes Complete.

QuickBooks Online Plus: 3 × $140 = $420 a month, $5,040 a year.

The gap between Xero ($2,124) and QuickBooks Plus ($5,040) is $2,916 a year for the same three companies. Price is not the whole answer, which is why the next section asks what you want the tool to do.

Choose in five questions

  1. Step 1: How many companies do you run? Past two, per-company pricing (Digits, QuickBooks, Puzzle) adds up fastest.

  2. Step 2: Do you want a person or software? If you want a bookkeeper who is accountable for the books, compare Pilot, Zeni and QuickBooks Live. If you want software with a reviewer you answer to, compare Kick and Puzzle's expert-reviewed plan.

  3. Step 3: Will an AI agent work in the books? If you use Claude or ChatGPT, check whether the connection can write or only read.

  4. Step 4: What does your CPA use? Ask before you buy. Every tool here exports a ledger, and moves between them are free at Accountable.

  5. Step 5: What do you need beyond bookkeeping? Bill pay points to Digits or Zeni, tax filing to Pilot, payroll to Xero (from $36 a month plus $6 an employee, run by Gusto) or QuickBooks.

Questions founders ask

What is the best AI bookkeeping software for a startup?

For one company that wants built-in bill pay and invoicing, Digits. For a founder with several companies or who uses Claude or ChatGPT, Accountable. For a person plus software, Pilot. For the lowest list price at three companies, Kick Plus at $100 to $200 a month or Xero at $177.

Is AI bookkeeping accurate enough to trust?

It is accurate enough when you can see why it chose each category and undo it. Puzzle claims up to 98% automated categorization and Digits publishes no rate, so ask any vendor how it shows its reasoning and how you undo a wrong answer.

Can AI replace a bookkeeper?

For categorizing, matching to the bank and preparing the close, yes. For tax filing, unusual transactions and judgment calls, name a CPA. Pilot and Zeni keep a person in the loop for that reason.

Is there free AI bookkeeping software?

Accountable Free covers one company and categorizes the first 100 transactions a month. Kick Free covers 250 transactions a year, and Mercury Books is free through 2026 and then $35 a month.

How much does AI bookkeeping software cost for three companies?

From $177 a month on Xero to $420 on QuickBooks Plus. Accountable is $198 and Digits Core is $300.

Three companies for $198, with the reason on every category

Accountable Pro covers 2 companies for $149 a month and each extra company is $49. Every transaction is categorized with its reason, your month is done by the 1st, and moving in from any tool on this list is free. See the Digits, Puzzle and QuickBooks comparisons.
