Puzzle vs QuickBooks for startups: prices, AI credits and the Accrual sale

Puzzle costs $8 to $220 a month less than QuickBooks at the same team size

Puzzle also sells Core with Expert Reviewed Bookkeeping at $171 a month for one company with up to $10,000 of monthly expenses. QuickBooks prices by users, and Puzzle prices by features and AI credits, so the cheaper one depends on how many people log in.

• Puzzle Starter and Core include 25 AI credits for the life of the account. Complete includes 100 a month and Scale 300. Puzzle Complete adds AI accuracy review, AI reconciliations, classes, departments, projects and revenue recognition.
• Puzzle says it auto-categorizes up to 98% of transactions. That is Puzzle's claim on its own page.
• Intuit's help center lists Accounting AI on Essentials, Plus and Advanced: Ready to post suggestions, auto-post notices for matched payroll, tax and bill payments, and, on Plus and Advanced, AI help with reconciliation and report insights.
• Neither company publishes an error rate we could check, so run your last three months through each trial.

Puzzle's MCP is read-only by design, and QuickBooks' connector can write invoices

Puzzle says its own agents are deterministic, so they may write to your ledger, while third-party AI such as Claude or ChatGPT is probabilistic and gets strictly read-only access through its MCP. Its MCP page calls the connection a way to analyze and report, not to change entries.

Intuit's QuickBooks connector works the other way for sales work: in Claude and ChatGPT it creates, updates and sends invoices, estimates and payment links, imports transactions and manages customers, and it asks for confirmation before destructive actions. Accrual announced on September 2, 2026 that it is buying Puzzle's accounting-firm business

CPA Practice Advisor reported that Accrual will acquire Puzzle's accounting-firm technology, including its AI-native ledger and month-end close products, and expected the deal to close within weeks. Puzzle's founder joined Accrual. The report says Puzzle will continue to operate independently for startups and small businesses that use it directly, while a new Puzzle focuses on accounting firms.

If you plan to stay for years, ask Puzzle which roadmap serves direct customers. Intuit, for its part, raised Essentials, Plus and Advanced prices for renewals on or after August 1, 2026, so neither choice is free of change.

Several companies: Puzzle links companies under one login, and QuickBooks bills each company

Puzzle's help center (August 31, 2026) says each company is its own Puzzle account and you link them by adding the same email to each one, which makes that email a master login. Puzzle's pricing page lists multi-entity support as not supported on Starter, available through an integration on Core and supported on Complete and Scale. It publishes no multi-company price.

QuickBooks works the same way on the surface: one sign-in, but each company is a separate paid subscription with its own users and bank connections. Three companies on Plus cost $420 a month, and three on Puzzle Complete cost about $360 if each takes that plan.

Choose Puzzle for lower prices and revenue recognition, QuickBooks for add-ons and your accountant's habits

• Choose Puzzle Complete if you want unlimited seats for $120, revenue recognition, and classes, departments and projects in one plan.
• Choose QuickBooks if your accountant already works in it, if you want Intuit's payroll and payments, or if you need Plus's inventory management and project profitability tracking.
• Puzzle's own QuickBooks page calls QuickBooks legacy software and lists surprise price hikes; it is a marketing page, so check the arithmetic yourself, and note that Puzzle also offers free migration.
